When we do nothing but read headlines, we leave ourselves vulnerable to deception. We allow the narrative of our lives to be dictated by circumstance and lies. We feel as if we have no control over our own life because we don’t!
The skill of critical thinking is in short supply nowadays it seems. We have a massive portion of the population that simply relies on everyone one around them to tell them what to do or what to learn. This causes them to be completely lost soon as life throws a curveball, like a recession.
Step 1:To become better at thinking critically, one has to begin with cutting off the noise. The overwhelming amounts of trash information we consume, tricks our consciousness into thinking we have learned something. When in the truth is, after spending 3 hours on Facebook how much useful information can you honestly say you learned. What skill have you improved? What new idea have you constructed in your brain?
Step 2: Begin to replace the noise with music! That means find information that adds real value to your life. Start exercising the most important muscle in your body. Challenge your thoughts; try to beat up your ideas. Quit treating the gift of intelligent thought as a right, and start treating it like a privilege. Dive into books that cause you to look up the meanings of words. This is not something to take lightly, the value of your output is directly connected to the value of what you input, into that beautifully elegant grey matter upstairs.
Step 3: Now that you have begun the long and arduous journey towards improving, what some may say is the most important skill you could ever learn. Don’t worry about the long game goal. Yes, always play the long game, but overestimate the time it will take to get there. Think like you did when you were a child how many days did it take to learn even the most simplistic of tasks. For instance, walking may have taken you 9, 10, or maybe even 12 months, so don’t expect to achieve greatness in a week, month, or even a year.
Step 4: Test your thoughts! How do you improve your critical thinking if the ideas and solutions you are coming up with are never tested. Just because it has thinking in the name does not mean, that action is not required. Most of your ideas in the beginning will quickly blow apart into a million pieces, don’t worry that is where everyone starts. The very idea of improving a skill requires that it isn’t well developed, therefore don’t be surprised when you your ideas fail. Adjust your solutions and try again; rinse, wash, and repeat. This is the process, it is painful yes, but necessary.
Step 5: Become dissatisfied with your current level no matter what you have achieved. This isn’t to say that you haven’t made progress, or that you shouldn’t be proud of how far you have come. It simply means, do not become complacent! The second you quit improving, is the second you begin to lose ground. Your ability must be continually improved upon, because the problem you face tomorrow will not become simpler. The skills you need to learn to solve those problems, won’t be less intricate.
This is why critical thinking is so important! If you have the ability to think critically, or in other words sort through thoughts and ideas objectively to eventually solve problems. Then you can achieve anything you want because the everything in life boils down to a problem needing to be solved. If you can’t solve the problem with your current skill set, critical thinking allows you to solve that problem by figuring out the skills needed and how to acquire them.
Following these steps will get you on the right path to improving your ability to think critically. Thus improving all facets of your life because you gain more keys to the solutions to your problems. This may sound vague to some, but I implore you to do these things. If want the ability to not be dependent on someone else for your information, and to solve problems on your own; this is required! Yes it is hard, but you can do it. I believe in You!
